Beatles - Abbey Road

The Beatles Abbey Road, maybe after Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon, is one of the most famous and appreciated album covers of all time. There is a lot of content surrounding the cover and the picture and the zebra crossing is one of the most visited spots in London.

In 2008 Paul Cole with 92 years old left this life and with him a curious fact. He was at the picture accidentally, never listened the album and thought that The Beatles were a bunch of kooks. As I was reading, we was with his wife in London vacations in 1969 and failed on recognize the world famous Beatles.

Me and my wife also have our moment on the zebra crossing and together with the visit on the John and Yoko Room at Hilton Amsterdam, were my moments as Beatles fan. =)

The sleeve was designed by Apple Records creative director Kosh. It is the only original UK Beatles album sleeve to show neither the artist name nor the album title on its front cover.

Check how it was the zebra crossing with EMI studios in the background on 25 September 1969.

The front cover design, a photograph of the group traversing a zebra crossing, was based on sketched ideas by McCartney, and taken on 8 August 1969 outside EMI Studios on Abbey Road. At around 11:30 that morning, photographer Iain Macmillan was given only ten minutes to take the photo whilst he stood on a step-ladder and a policeman held up the traffic.

In the scene, the group walk across the street in single file from left to right, with Lennon leading, followed by Starr, McCartney, and Harrison. McCartney is barefoot. With the exception of Harrison, the group are wearing suits designed by Tommy Nutter.

To the left of the picture, parked next to the zebra crossing, is a white Volkswagen Beetle motor-car which belonged to one of the people living in the block of flats across from the recording studio. After the album was released, the number plate (LMW 281F) was stolen repeatedly from the car. In 1986, the car was sold at auction for £2,530 and in 2001 was on display in a museum in Germany.

Beatles - Revolver & Cesar Moreno

Taí uma coisa que eu quero fazer. Na minha pós graduação (em artes visuais), quero fazer exatamente o que esse Diretor de Arte chamado César Moreno fez com a capa do Revolver. Pegar a capa e deixar com a cara dele. Como assim?

Poisé. Planejo pro meu projeto final fazer exatamente isso que ele fez. Escolher umas 5 capas de discos que eu mais gosto e fazer uma “releitura”, uma espécie de layout novo como se eu tivesse sido o diretor de arte daquela capa.

Essa releitura que ele fez tá bonita demais. Ficou igual ao layout antigo, mas com cara de hoje em dia. Além de "ficar um pouco mais moderno", os Beatles estão desenhados com a cara de hoje em dia, tirando o Lennon que está com a cara da época que foi assassinado e o Harrison de quando ele morreu.

Se bem que a capa do Revolver dos Beatles é totalmente moderna. Todos os designerszinhos usam essa formulinha pra fazer coisas “modernas”. De cada 10 layouts que vejo em portifólios por aí, pelo menos 5 tem essa linguagem de recorte, ornamentos e afins.

Falando um pouco do Disco, esse disco só não é perfeito por causa das viagens indianas do George Harrison. Simplesmente pulo essa viagem. Mas no geral esse disco é genial. Acho melhor do que o aclamado Sgt Peppers. Mas enfim, todo mundo fala só do Sgt. Peppers, então todo mundo só gosta do Sgt. Peppers.

Beatles: The Evolution

Falar sobre as capas dos Beatles é complicado, mas ao mesmo tempo fácil. Fácil por ser uma das bandas que mais gosto. Complicado por ser muito difícil de escolher qual é a mais legal.

Beatles é uma banda tão plural que é difícil definir seu estilo. Podemos dizer que eles divulgaram o iê-iê-iê, invetaram o Heavy Metal (vide Helter Skelter), modificaram a psicodelia, mudaram o conceito de música romância e claro, foram uma das primeiras Boys Band do século.

Para identificar essa evolução musical, que teve na sua curta carreira de aproximadamente 8 anos, nada melhor do que um disco que representasse suas características na fase inicial da banda, e também o fim da carreira, com suas barbas longas e jeito político de ser.

Nessas duas coletâneas, a banda fez um trabalho excelente dividindo o clima de cada capa com as músicas que foram escolhidas. O clima da banda foi muito bem representado por essas duas fotos. Uma de 62 até 66 e de 67 até 1970, quando a banda acabou.

A capa do ”Red Album” (62-66) é utilizada a mesma foto da capa dos primeiro álbum da banda, o “Please Please Me”. Para fazer a capa do “Blue Album” (67-70), a banda resolveu fazer a foto no mesmo lugar, o Macherster Square em Londres e manter sua mesma posição e disposição e o ângulo da foto. Inicialmente essa foto foi feita pra capa do disco Get Back, que logo em seguida virou Let It Be, e assim a foto não foi utilizada.

A própria banda escolheu as músicas da cada álbum e as cores de cada capa. Essas duas artes são uma das capas que mais gosto e os dois álbuns duplos, tem tudo que um iniciante em Beatles precisa saber pra depois explorar discos como Sgt Peppers, Robber Soul e o Revolver. Esses, os meus preferidos.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

This cover is one of the most mysterious covers of all time, with his technique of cutting and pasting, there are great mysteries surrounding this artwork. Grammy winner for best album cover, who was developed by Robert Fraser as art director, and Peter Blake with Michael Cooper as a designer and photographer.

In his time this type of design was innovative, today we see many things with cutting and pasting style, today is almost a trend in design, since you can put various ideas in the same layout and still make you look beautiful, engaging and modern.

In this album cover, many celebrities have their space, like Marlene Dietrich, WC Fields, Diana Dors, Bob Dylan, Sigmund Freud, Aleister Crowley, Edgar Allan Poe, Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, Marlon Brando, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and Indian gurus (request from George Harrison). Besides these celebrities there is also the first members of the Beatles were, Pete Best and Stuart Stucliffe.


As I said earlier, if you get the CD of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band you will feel anger, because you can not see much things with clarity, you have to look at LP cover album to be able to look closely at every detail. In addition to a beautiful hard cover, you will buying one of the best album of all time, which is not only my opinion.

In the design concept, this album once again innovated and make a trend, today many people use this album artwork as a reference, not only musically but also as design. Besides be an english Pop Art artist, Peter Blake did works for album cover of Oasis - Stop The Clocks. Better than read I writing here, is to go for an used bookstore, and buy this album, put on the record player and look at the cover and increasingly discovering that this recording is wonderful.
