Similar Album: Dream Theater x Circus Maximus

This is old, but I did find this article at http://www.metalsucks.net/ and the Dream Theater album A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011) cover uses the same stock image (that costs around 15$) as the Circus Maximus (a Norwegian progressive metal quintet from Oslo) used in their album The 1st Chapter (2005).

As Circus Maximus tries to sound like Dream Theater, for me, there is no problem to use the same image. At least the Dream Theater cover looks much better. Of course, Hugh Syme was the man behind it. (If you don't know, he is the guy behind all the album covers from Rush and many other bands).

Well, let's talk about Hugh Syme. Another designer with specialization in album covers design. As I already said, he did ALL the Rush's album covers since 1975! Your style is look like digital paint + surrealistic + manipulation pictures.

But the thing that I like more in Hugh style is the concept. All your creations has been thinking in concept. The design style is just a tool to developed your ideas.

When I look through these covers that I posted here, I get a trip and I imagine a lot of things. I see concepts, the music, the feelings...

That's it I want when I try to do some art, design ou art direction. Concept is everything! Style is just a tool ;)

Aerosmith - Get a Grip

This album cover is like Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother, but the difference is the piecing and the closest picture.

Dream Theater - Octavarium

I really like Hugh's design, but sometimes he does covers very similar to the Storm Thorgerson.

Queensrÿche - Promissed Land

I really like this effect of an art in wood.

I love this dado's wall.

Bem, vamos falar sobre Hugh Syme. Outro designer com especialização em design de capas de discos. Como eu já disse, ele faz TODAS as capas do Rush desde 1975! Seu estilo é parecido com um pintura digital + manipulação de fotos + surrealismo.

Mas a coisa que eu mais gosto no estilo Hugh é o conceito. Todas as suas criações foram pensadas no conceito. O estilo de seu design é apenas uma ferramenta para desenvolver suas idéias.

Quando eu olho através dessas capas que eu postei aqui, eu viajo e imagino um monte de coisas. Eu penso nos conceitos, na música, nos sentimentos ...

É isso que eu quero quando eu tento fazer alguma arte, design ou direção de arte. Conceito é tudo! A linguagem é apenas uma ferramenta ;)

Megadeth - Youthanasia

Youthanasia, for me, is the best Megadeth's album. This record is one of the album I really listen a lot. Like a thousands times =)

Who made this album cover was Hugh Syme, the same designer who did album covers from Rush, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater and others. Since 1975 he did all Rush's album covers! Since 1975!!! He also appeared playing keyboards in some Rush records.

Well, lets talk about Megadeth Youthanasia's album. I like the Hugh's design style. Is like Storm Thogerson's design style (Pink Floyd's covers). For progressive bands and for this album cover from Megadeth, I think it is a awesome album cover.

This record talks about polemics questions like death, war, and incest. Also talk about Dave Mustaine's problems with heroin.

This controversal digital art surrealistic was banned from some countries like Malaysia and Singapore, because the cover art was defamatory. Do me a favor! This cover is light compared to others cover art from Cannibal Corpse for example ;)

I really like this design style. Is like Dalí using Adobe Photoshop manipulation ;)

O Youthanasia, para mim, é o melhor álbum do Megadeth. Este disco é um dos o discos que eu mais escutei na vida. =)

Quem fez esta capa foi Hugh Syme, o mesmo designer que fez as capas de discos do Rush, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater e outros. Desde 1975, ele fez TODAS capas do Rush! Desde 1975! Ele também aparece tocando teclado em alguns discos Rush.

Bem, vamos falar sobre o Youthanasia. Eu gosto muito desse estilo de design do Hugh. É parecido com o do Storm Thogerson (que fez as capas do Pink Floyd). Pra bandas de metal progressivo e pra essa capa do Megadeth, eu

acho que é um estilo de capa incrível.

Este disco fala sobre questões polêmicas como a morte, guerra, e incesto. Também fala sobre os problemas Dave Mustaine com heroína.

Esta arte digital-surrealista foi banida em alguns países como a Malásia e Singapura, porque a arte é difamatório. Fala sério! Esta capa é leve em comparação com outras capas por aí como as do Cannibal Corpse, por exemplo;)

Eu realmente gosto deste estilo de design. É tipo o Dalí usando manipulações no Photoshop ;)

Iron Maiden - Discography

I'm a huge fan of Iron Maiden. I already listen his albuns many and many times. In this days, I didn't listen too much, but sometimes, Evil That Men Do play in my shuffle iTunes Music and I rise de volume and sing it loud!

Well, Iron Maiden is not complete without Eddie and one artist can say "I created the Eddie" is Derek Riggs. His is the man! I love his works with Iron and others bands, but, in sometimes, I don't like some the album cover that he design… well, this is my oppinion. =)

Other guys like Melvyn Grant, Tim Bradstreet, David Patchett, Mark Wilkinson and Hugh Syme did contrinuition to Iron Mainden's album covers. But Only Derek Riggs made like 90 percent of Iron's album covers. His is also a member of Iron ;)

This it was the firts album cover produced by Derek in 1980. The Iron's Logo was put too much close to the border, but the design I just like it.

I really hate this cover! Argh! I read that the artist David Parchett (who made this ugly cover) ask to not be credited to this "artwork".

Eu sou muito fã de Iron Maiden. Eu já ouvi esses discos um milhão de vezes cada! Hoje em dia não escuto tanto, mas toda vez que toca The Evil That Men Do no meu iTunes eu aumento o volume e canto junto com o Bruce ;)

Bem, o Iron Maiden não é completo sem o Eddie, e o único cara do mundo que pode dizer: "eu criei o Eddie" é Derek Riggs. Ele é o cara! Acho seus desenhos muito foda, tanto do Iron, quanto de outras bandas, mas algumas vezes ele faz umas coisas feias e eu não curto muito não.. enfim.. é a minha opinião =)

Outros caras também fizeram algumas capas dos discos do Iron como Melvyn Grant, Tim Bradstreet, David Patchett, Mark Wilkinson e Hugh Syme, mas só Derek Riggs fez 90 porcento das capas. Ele é quase um integrante da banda.
